“How does she do it?” That’s what a few of us photographers were asking during the game. How does Alyssa Thomas, double-teamed, sometimes triple-teamed, still get to the hoop and make the basket through contact? It is truly amazing. Alyssa helped the Sun beat the Liberty 96-76 with 18 points and 5 assists. But she wasn’t the only one.
The Sun exemplified teamwork in this game with five players in double figures, six players with 9 points or more, and 20 assists overall. Courtney Williams led all scorers with 22 points, while Jonquel Jones had 19 points with 12 rebounds – her fourth double-double in 5 games. Jasmine Thomas scored 14 points with 8 assists.
Sun Coach Curt Miller stated after the game, “[We had] a great start that set the tone. We came out really fast out of the gate in the first quarter. Second straight game – a lot of attention to detail, [attention] to the scout. Our defense really made them work.” Alyssa Thomas commented, “As long as we keep moving the ball and playing together, we’re a really hard team to guard.”
For the Liberty, Tina Charles led her team in scoring with 17 points, followed by Shavonte Zellous and Sugar Rogers with 16 and 12 points respectively.
Next, the Sun will face the undefeated Minnesota Lynx in St. Paul, MN on June 17th, while the Liberty travel to Arlington, TX to take on the Dallas Wings June 16th.
