Shavonte Zellous hit a last-second three point shot lifting the New York Liberty to a 79-76 victory over the Connecticut Sun at Mohegan Sun Arena. The highly contested game was close throughout the 40 minutes with 15 lead changes and 12 ties.
In the second to last Liberty play of the game, Epiphanny Prince hit a corner three-pointer to tie the game, leaving 24.3 seconds on the clock. The Sun were unable to score for the win on their last possession leaving 1.8 seconds on the clock for the Liberty’s last play. After a timeout, the Liberty were able to advance the ball to midcourt leading to their successful inbounds play with Zellous sinking the game-winner as the final horn sounded.
New York Liberty’s Tina Charles led all scorers with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Epiphanny Prince had 15 points, followed by Shavonte Zellous with 14 points for the Liberty.
Chiney Ogwumike was the leading scorer for the Sun with 17 points, followed by Courtney Williams with 16 points. Alyssa Thomas had a strong game with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 assists after missing several of the past games recovering from a shoulder injury. Jasmine Thomas also had 12 points for the Sun.
